Bikini line or the complete intimate area
The two terms mean different things, and the difference decides your plan. The bikini line is the edge: the line that shows around underwear or a swimsuit, plus a strip beyond it. The complete intimate area includes the pubic area, the labia and, if you wish, the buttock crease.
Both can be combined or approached step by step. Many people start with the bikini line and extend later. Where the surface ends is agreed at the first appointment, so no hard transition appears.
Why this area is different
The skin here is thinner and more sensitive than on arms or legs, while the hair is stronger and denser. That combination makes the area rewarding for the laser and more demanding in its settings. We work in smaller sections and adjust the energy step by step.
The most common reason to come is not stubble but what follows it: ingrown hairs, razor burn and irritated spots after shaving or waxing. Once the hair stays away, that reason goes with it.
How the treatment works
It starts with the free trial treatment on a small spot. You feel what a pulse is like, we see how your skin reacts. During the session everything that is not being treated stays covered.
Before every pulse a burst of cold protects the skin. Most people describe the feeling in this area as more noticeable than on arms or legs, but manageable, and more pleasant than waxing. As a rule 6 to 8 sessions are needed, 4 to 8 weeks apart, because only hair in the active growth phase is reached.
Before and after a session
Shave the area before the appointment. The laser needs the root in the skin, and waxing or plucking takes it out.
How long to leave out wax, plucking, sun and self tanner beforehand depends on your skin and on the season. Tanned skin absorbs a lot of light itself, so we look at it before every session. You do not get a list of prohibitions, you get advice that fits you.
After the session the skin is briefly irritated, often slightly red, and that usually settles within a few hours. Whether to wait a few days with sauna, swimming pool, sport or sun is something Magdalena tells you afterwards, depending on how your skin reacted. You may shave between appointments at any time.
Treatment during menstruation is possible. The skin can be more sensitive on those days. Just tell us, and we adjust the settings or move the appointment.
Who it suits, and where the limit is
Our device has two wavelengths, 755 nanometre alexandrite and 1064 nanometre Nd:YAG. Almost all skin and hair types can be treated, including darker skin tones. White, grey and very light blond hairs cannot be treated, because the pigment is missing.
We do not laser over tattoos, and prominent pigmented moles are covered. During pregnancy and breastfeeding we postpone treatment. If the skin in the area is acutely irritated we wait until it has calmed down. Medication that makes the skin sensitive to light belongs in the conversation beforehand.
