Back and shoulders · MunichBack laser hair removal:
the places you cannot reach yourself.
Back, shoulders and neck are hard to shave on your own. Anyone who has tried knows the missed spots and the ingrown hairs afterwards. We treat in Grünwald on the southern edge of Munich, and Magdalena Graml treats you herself.
Which parts are meant
The usual division is upper back, lower back, shoulders and neck. These parts can be treated separately or together. In men they usually sit next to each other, so a shared plan often makes more sense than one area after another: treated separately, visible edges appear.
The neckline is a case of its own. It grows back quickly after every haircut and is trimmed at the barber again and again. Where the permanently hair free surface should begin is something we mark together beforehand, so the line stays natural and does not look drawn on.
Why strong hair responds well
The laser finds the hair through its pigment. Strong dark hair carries a lot of melanin and absorbs the light particularly well. The fact that male body hair is denser and stronger does not make the treatment harder, quite the opposite. What matters is not the thickness of the hair but its growth phase.
Stronger body hair is usually disposition, with hormones playing a part. The laser works on the hair, not on the cause.
How the treatment works
It starts with the free trial treatment on one spot. Afterwards we know which of the two wavelengths of our device suits you. For darker skin tones we use the longer wavelength, 1064 nanometre Nd:YAG, because the skin absorbs less of it.
We treat with you lying on your front, working the surface lane by lane. Before every pulse a burst of cold protects the skin. The back is considered less sensitive than the face or the intimate area. As a rule 6 to 8 sessions are needed, 4 to 8 weeks apart. About two weeks after the first session many treated hairs fall out.
Before and after a session
The back is shaved before the appointment. Because that is hard to do alone, many people ask for help or use a long handled razor. Wax and epilators take out the root the laser needs.
How long to leave out wax, plucking, sun and self tanner beforehand depends on your skin and on the season. Tanned skin absorbs a lot of light itself, so we look at it before every session. You do not get a list of prohibitions, you get advice that fits you.
After the session the skin is briefly irritated, often slightly red, and that usually settles within a few hours. Whether to wait a few days with sauna, swimming pool, sport or sun is something Magdalena tells you afterwards, depending on how your skin reacted. You may shave between appointments at any time.
Who it suits, and where the limit is
With two wavelengths almost all skin and hair types can be treated. White, grey and very light blond hairs contain no melanin and cannot be removed. On a back that is turning grey this means the dark part goes and the grey part stays. We say that beforehand, not afterwards.
We do not laser over tattoos, tattooed surfaces stay out. Moles and prominent pigmented spots are covered. If the skin is acutely irritated we wait until it has calmed down.
Frequently asked questions about back, shoulders and neck
Can I have only the upper back treated?
Yes. Upper back, lower back, shoulders and neck can be treated separately. We agree the borders beforehand so no visible step appears.
Does the neckline still look natural?
Yes, if it is discussed beforehand. We mark the line together and treat below it. The hairline itself stays untouched.
How many sessions does a back need?
As a rule 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart. Strong dark hair responds well. After the free trial treatment we tell you what to expect.
Can you laser over tattoos?
No. Tattooed surfaces stay out, the skin around them can be treated. The ink would absorb the energy and damage the skin.
Can I go to the gym afterwards?
Sweat, friction and heat irritate freshly treated skin, so many people wait a day or two. How it looks for you we tell you after the session. The same goes for sauna and swimming pool.
What your treatment includes and what it costs is something we settle after the trial treatment. What the price depends on is explained on the page Prices. Directions and opening hours are on Contact and directions.
