Why does laser actually hurt?
For a hair never to grow back, the laser beam has to hit the melanin in the hair shaft, convert the light energy into heat and conduct this heat precisely down to the hair root in order to permanently disable the stem cells. The pain does not arise deep at the root, but at the sensitive nerve endings of the upper skin layer (epidermis), which register this brief wave of heat.
The secret behind “practically painless”: millisecond cooling
That modern high-end lasers neutralise pain almost completely is not a marketing trick but pure physics:
- The cryo principle (dynamic cooling): top-of-the-range systems work with a precisely timed cryogen spray pulse that abruptly cools the skin surface a fraction of a second before the laser pulse.
- Outsmarting the nerves: the targeted cold numbs the pain receptors in the uppermost skin layer in advance. When the laser beam penetrates immediately afterwards, the surface is optimally protected and the transmission of pain is blocked.
- What you actually still feel: instead of burning heat, each shot feels like a tiny, ice-cold puff of air, accompanied by a slight, dull tap. Even highly sensitive areas such as the underarms or bikini line lose their terror — without any numbing creams.
